The Boca das Voltas Viewpoint is located in the elevated area of the parish of São Jorge, in the municipality of Santana, on the north coast of Madeira Island. This viewpoint offers panoramic views over Falcas, Achada da Madeira, Lombo do Urzal, and further down, the mouth of Ribeira do Porco, situated in the parish of Boaventura, municipality of São Vicente.
Access:
Access to the viewpoint can be achieved via hiking trails or by off-road vehicles, requiring approximately a 40-minute walk to reach the site.
Fun Facts:
Camping: The viewpoint area is considered one of Madeira’s best-kept secrets for camping. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) allows camping on-site, upon request through the Regional Government’s Portal Simplifica. There are no associated costs, but visitors must collect and transport their own waste to the nearest bin, as there are no trash containers on-site.
Visitor Tips:
Preparation: Due to the remote access and lack of infrastructure on-site, it’s advisable to bring all necessary supplies, including water, food, and bags for waste collection.
Respect for the Environment: As the viewpoint is located within the Laurissilva Forest, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s essential to preserve the environment by avoiding littering and respecting local flora and fauna.
