The Madeira Botanical Garden – Eng.º Rui Vieira is one of Funchal’s most emblematic natural treasures, offering a unique experience for nature and botany enthusiasts.
History and Location
Inaugurated on April 30, 1960, the Botanical Garden is situated at Quinta do Bom Sucesso, approximately 4 km from Funchal’s center, in the Santa Maria Maior parish. This privileged location provides breathtaking panoramic views over the city and Funchal Bay.
Botanical Collections
Covering an area of about 80,000 m², the garden houses an impressive collection of over 2,500 plant species from around the world. The collections are organized into various thematic areas:
Indigenous and Endemic Plants of Madeira: Featuring around 200 native species, offering a comprehensive view of the local flora.
Succulent Plants: Including a variety of cacti and other species adapted to arid climates.
Tropical and Medicinal Plants: Highlighting exotic species with therapeutic and ornamental properties.
Additional Attractions
Besides the botanical collections, the garden hosts the Natural History Museum and the Madeira Herbarium, institutions dedicated to research and conservation of the region’s biodiversity.
Fun Fact
Before becoming the Madeira Botanical Garden, the area was part of an estate belonging to the family of William Reid, founder of the famous Reid’s Hotel.
